Two worthwhile websites

While looking for information about a couple of movies, I recently came across two websites I hadn’t previously been aware of, both of which are packed with interesting material.

Midnight Eye, co-edited by Tom Mes, ubiquitous expert on all things cinematically Japanese, is a great-looking site devoted to Japanese film. It’s got a rich selection of movie and book reviews, interviews with filmmakers (Shinya Tsukamoto, Shinji Aoyama, Mamoru Oshii, Hirokazu Kore-Eda, Koji Wakamatsu … the list just goes on!), and in-depth articles about subjects as wide-ranging as the work of animator Tomoyasu Morata, the career of cult director Yasuzo Masumura, and Japanese sex education films.

The Wild Eye is a less formal site, the blog of a very enthusiastic writer named Matt Blake with a passion for Italian cinema. It’s loaded with news and notes about current Italian releases, retrospective views on older, sometimes obscure titles, and information about performers and directors.
